America VS Russia | Profitable Wars | By Brett Keane
The world is watching with fear and anxiety as the tensions between America and Russia escalate over Ukraine. The two nuclear superpowers are locked in a dangerous game of brinkmanship, with each side accusing the other of aggression and provocation. But what is the real motive behind this conflict? Is it about security, democracy, human rights, or something else?
In this blog post, I will argue that the main reason for this confrontation is profit. Yes, you heard me right: profit. Both America and Russia stand to gain financially from a war in Ukraine, even if it risks a global catastrophe. How? Let me explain.
First of all, let’s look at America. The US has been the dominant power in the world since the end of the Cold War, but its hegemony is being challenged by rising competitors like China and Russia. To maintain its supremacy, the US needs to assert its influence and interests in strategic regions like Europe and Asia. Ukraine is one such region, as it borders both NATO and Russia, and has rich natural resources like gas and coal.
By supporting Ukraine against Russia, the US hopes to achieve several goals: to weaken Russia’s influence and economy, to expand NATO’s presence and deterrence, to secure access to Ukraine’s energy resources and markets, and to boost its own military-industrial complex. According to a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), the US was the world’s largest arms exporter in 2020, accounting for 37% of global arms deliveries. A war in Ukraine would create more demand for US weapons and equipment, as well as more contracts for US defense companies.
Secondly, let’s look at Russia. Russia has been trying to restore its status as a great power since the collapse of the Soviet Union, but it faces many challenges: a declining population, a stagnant economy, a corrupt regime, and a hostile West. To overcome these difficulties, Russia relies on its vast natural resources, especially oil and gas, which account for more than half of its export revenues. Ukraine is a key transit country for Russian gas exports to Europe, which is Russia’s largest and most lucrative market.
By invading Ukraine, Russia hopes to achieve several goals: to secure its control over Crimea and Donbas, which are strategically important and culturally close to Russia; to disrupt Ukraine’s integration with the West and prevent its membership in NATO; to demonstrate its military might and deterrence; and to increase its leverage over Europe by threatening its energy security. According to SIPRI, Russia was the world’s second largest arms exporter in 2020, accounting for 20% of global arms deliveries. A war in Ukraine would create more opportunities for Russia to showcase and sell its weapons and equipment, as well as more profits for Russian defense companies.
So there you have it: America and Russia are both driven by profit in their confrontation over Ukraine. They are not interested in resolving the conflict peacefully or respecting the sovereignty and rights of the Ukrainian people. They are only interested in maximizing their own gains at the expense of others. This is why I call this a profitable war.
But who pays the price for this war? The answer is obvious: the people of Ukraine. They are the ones who suffer from death, injury, displacement, poverty, hunger, disease, trauma, and despair. They are the ones who lose their homes, lands, families, friends, culture, and identity. They are the ones who bear the brunt of this senseless violence.
This is why I urge you to join me in supporting peace in Ukraine. Peace is not only possible, but necessary. Peace is not only moral, but rational. Peace is not only desirable, but profitable. Peace is the only way to end this war and prevent a bigger one.
